Melbourne’s newest hospital – Sunshine Private – has gone live with Telstra Health’s Kyra Clinical electronic medical record (EMR) system and MedicalDirector solutions as it welcomes its first patients.

Initially operating as a 30 bed medical and surgical ward and 21 bed mental health unit, Sunshine Private Hospital has plans to expand to 120 beds in its state-of-the-art facility in Melbourne’s west.

Sunshine Private Hospital has been live with Kyra Clinical for a month, enabling staff to be trained and become familiar with the EMR which is used by more than seven private hospital groups Australia-wide.

Kyra Clinical is a part of Telstra Health’s Kyra Platform, which supports safe and high quality clinical care delivery and patient experiences, enabling healthcare professionals to capture and access information across the entire patient journey.

Kyra includes a suite of digital hospital solutions that are also used by Healthscope, St John of God Health Care, St Vincent’s, Monash Hospital, Prince of Wales Hospital, North Metropolitan health service, and Royal Rehab.

Telstra Health Managing Director, Elizabeth Koff AM, said: “We’re delighted to implement Kyra Clinical ahead of schedule. An interoperable electronic medical record lays an important foundation for the hospital’s digital healthcare ecosystem.”

“The implementation of MedicalDirector solutions alongside our Kyra Clinical offering demonstrates the breadth of capability across the Telstra Health group that we can bring to support clinical care and better clinician experiences”, Elizabeth Koff said.

Unitas Healthcare Chief Executive Dr Malak Sukkar said: “Through a train the trainer program our superusers and staff are confident the EMR will support our clinical care teams to provide the highest quality, patient-centred, safe and efficient care from any device freeing them up to spend more time with patients.”

Kyra EMR provides real time access to patient information anytime and anywhere including on mobile devices and enables peer-to-peer communication between all clinicians, clinical teams and patients while eliminating the need for paper.

Streamlining the delivery of clinical care, Kyra Clinical enables a smooth transfer of care between wards and theatres, eReferrals from consultations and medication management.

The doctors and specialists at Sunshine Private Hospital’s consulting suites are using MedicalDirector Clinical as the electronic health record and MedicalDirector Bluechip for practice management, demonstrating the appetite for a connected care ecosystem. MedicalDirector was acquired by Telstra Health in 2021.

“We’re proud to enable healthcare providers, such as Sunshine Private Hospital, with the ability to access comprehensive information through connected healthcare from admissions, theatre and wards to mental health units and specialist suites through an ecosystem of solutions across the care continuum,” Elizabeth added.

Sunshine Private Hospital is 75-bed facility offering medical, surgical and mental health services.  The hospital is supported by a four-bed high dependency unit and five operating theatres.  The hospital is well-equipped to provide a broad range of specialist services that include general surgery, paediatric surgery, faciomaxillary surgery, endoscopy, ear nose and throat, gynaecology, cardiology, orthopaedic, sleep studies, oncology, ophthalmology and women’s mental health. The hospital is within the Victorian Government’s Sunshine Health, Wellbeing and Education precinct which includes the Sunshine hospital, the new Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital and a $51 million health teaching and training campus.
